There’s Asha and Jet. They’re fraternal twins. They were born really early. Nic-u, talking, and he had eyesight. And it was like all a sudden his soul was gone. I had a beautiful friend named Jenny and uh she said, “Kourt there’s something up with Jet.” And she goes, “Have you heard autism.” And then he was diagnosed. And I did some research. I just dove right in. I was a speech therapist, physical therapist, occupational therapist. They said that he would never be potty trained, got cerebral palsy in his hands, he’d never be able to have fine tuned motor skills. He’d probably end up in the state, you know, hospital. No, all my kids have defied the odds.
Anytime you have twins, one has autism, the other one’s going to have some level of autism, but she’s high functioning.
She’s level two. She was in private and then went into regular high school because she asked to be. Graduated with honors and a scholarship and off an IEP and 4.0. We just went and worked side by side together and I use that scholarship for that in home.
It gave the opportunity for him to have more hours to have one-on-one. It gave the speech because I I was I’m autistic and I was nonverbal and I was deaf. So it gave the opportunity for speech to go inside the school. So now Jet is now can say up to two sentences and also to do with physical and occupational therapy. So that gave more motor with his hands with speech and cognitive that made him progress more functioning to almost something profound to almost get to close to a level two because he’s moving up more. Be able to cross the street and look both ways, push the button, put on his shoes, be able to um cook, take out the trash, sweep. That’s all part of that that extra help.
He has improved just constantly improving. I’m like amazed by how what he can do, how much he’s learned. He’s he’s just come such a long way.
I love that the foundation makes the parents do the classes and to go to the school and work because that’s not going to help your kid if you don’t.
There’s a lot of families or or parents that don’t really put in a lot of effort. They just want to kind of hand them off and have somebody else take care of it. Um and so that’s why they have the families get involved. And she’s always been like that. She’s always wants to be involved. Look, it’s amazing that people with dealing with cancer or anything wants to and is able to do all that stuff. You’re passionate about it.
Very passionate because I know what it feels like to be left out and not understood because I still get made fun of today and I’m 50 and it’s hard.
